International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2022 will be celebrated on 21st June 2022. The IDY has been celebrated globally on 21st June after the announcement made by the United Nations General Assembly in the year 2014. On the proposal of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously agreed to celebrate 21st June as International Day of Yoga (IDY) every year. The First International Day of Yoga was celebrated in the year 2015.

The aim and objective to celebrate Yoga globally are to achieve global health and wellness. India believes in “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” means the world is one family and “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah Sarve Santu Niramay” which means “may all be at peace, may no one suffer from illness”. This goal of a healthy world can be achieved only by understanding the core strengths of Yoga, following Yoga and practising Yoga.

Since 2015, the world is celebrating the International Day of Yoga (IDY) annually on the 21st of June. However, due to pandemic COVID19, last Yoga Day i.e. IDY 2020 was cancelled. The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India regulates the IDY celebration programme at the national and international levels. International Yoga Day 2022: Theme & Venue Announced

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has announced ‘Yoga for Humanity’ as theme for IDY 2022. The 8th edition of the International Yoga Day is all set to be held on 21st June worldwide. This year, the main event will be held in Mysuru, Karnataka. The Prime Ministers also urged people to participate in Yoga Day celebration and spread awareness about the same. The yogic practices are more relevant especially after the challenging phase of COIVD19.

International Day of Yoga (IDY): History

The idea to publicize Yoga globally to assign an International day of Yoga was first proposed by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi during his 1st speech on 27th September 2014 at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).  He stated there:

It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well-being. International Yoga Day 2022: Theme, Events

On 21st June 2022, the International Day of Yoga will be celebrated in India and the rest of the world. The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has also started preparation of the IDY 2022 programme. In this regard, the Ministry will announce more information soon. The IDY 2022 theme is ‘Yoga for Humanity’. The PM Modi announced the same in Man Ki Baat Programme. The general public, an institution whether it is government or private can take part in the celebration of Yoga day.

The Ministry of AYUSH celebrates Yoga day on a large scale and people are invited to join the event. Yoga T-shirts, Yoga Mats, Yoga Booklets are also distributed to the organization/people participating in the Yoga Day event to spread awareness about Yoga Day.

How to participate in the International Day of Yoga?

Every citizen of the world can join the movement as it is not bound by any limits. As far as, special yoga events are concerned, one can approach the concerned management authority to register for Yoga practice on Yoga day. Private institutions like Pantajali Yogpeeth, Art of Living and other yoga institutions also organize the Yoga practice session on International Yoga day. One can directly contact the concerned authority. In this regard, the Ministry of AYUSH will publish detailed information in the coming weeks.

Eligibility for Participation in IDY Event

There are no specific guidelines for participating in the Yoga Day Events. Anyone can register for the Yoga day event. However, it is mandatory to register with all correct details such as name, mobile number and email etc. The applicants need to contact the concerned nodal officer or visit the official website of the concerned Yoga institute/organization/NGO which are organizing the Yoga Day Event.

The Ministry of AYUSH organizes International Yoga Day celebration events in India on the 21st June every year. Every year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi awards Yoga award for excellent work in the field of Yoga and its promotion. The details of IDY events held till now are as below:

International Yoga Day 2021 The events and themes of the IDY 2021 have been finalized now. The theme of the IDY 2021 is “Yoga at home and Yoga with Family”.
IDY Celebration 2020

It was not organized due to the pandemic COVID19. However, people were asked to exercise Yoga virtually at home.

International Yoga Day Event 2019

The event was organized in Jharkhand where PM Narendra Modi and CM of the state along with large gathering performed yoga exercises.

International Yoga Day programme 2018 Dehradun, Uttarakhand witnessed a huge crowd in the presence of PM Narendra Modi performing Yoga on this day.
IDY Event 2017 The event was held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in presence of PM Modi.
