Shaheed Diwas which is also known as Martyr’s Day is celebrated on 23rd March every year in remembrance of our freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. In the history, on this day, these freedom fighters sacrificed their life for freedom of our great Nation.  On 23rd March 1931, the British Government hanged all three freedom fighters to death. It is important to mention here that the 30th January is also celebrated as Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Diwas in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. On 30th January, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Nation was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. On 23rd March 1931, the British Government hanged great sons of India to death for their involvement in killing of John P. Saunders, the Superintendent of Police. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev planned to kill James Scott to revenge the lathi charge ordered to silent ‘Simon, Go Back’ movement. They killed the John P. Saunders mistakenly. Later they planned to attack Central Legislative Assembly for sending message to the British Government that India will not tolerate the killing of Lal Lajpat Rai and also to oppose the Public Safety Bill and Trade Dispute Act. On 8th April, 1929, they bombed the Central Legislative Assembly but unfortunately got arrested immediately after the incident.

The British Government later hanged these bravehearts on 23rd March 1931 which shocked the entire Nation. At the age of 22 and 23, they sacrificed their life for freedom of this Nation. It is duty of people of this country to remember freedom fighters.

Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day: Significance

Celebration of Shaheed Diwas is basically a way to thanks the brave sons of India who have made supreme sacrifice to achieve freedom. As stated above, this day on 23rd March 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged by the British Government. All these freedom fighters were very young. At the age of 22 and 23 where people starts to understand the life, they fought for country’s freedom and made supreme sacrifice. It is very important to spread their thoughts for the Nation so that today’s youth understand the price of freedom. Every citizen has responsibility to make this country great. We did not get opportunity to fight for freedom of this Nation but we can participate in growth of this country as a citizen.
