National Science Day 2022: History, Theme, Importance

India celebrates National Science Day every year on 28th February. It is basically a tribute to Sir C.V. Raman for the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ on 28th February 1928.

Late in 1930, the discovery of Sir C.V. Raman was recognized, and he was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics. The first National Science Day was celebrated on 28th February 1987. In this article, we will discuss National Science Day history, theme and importance.

What is Raman Effect?

The famous Raman Effect is named after Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, who first published observations of the effect in 1928. As per the Raman effect, a change in the wavelength of light occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules. When a light beam traverses a dust-free, transparent sample of a chemical compound, a small fraction of the light emerges in directions other than that of the incoming beam.

National Science Day 2022: History

In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) requested the Government of India to designate February 28 as National Science Day (NSD). Primarily, it was an initiative to recognize the achievements of Sir C.V. Raman in science but, the work of other scientists is also appreciated.

The Government of India approved the request of NCSTC, and the first National Science Day was celebrated in Universities, colleges, schools and other institutions on 28th February 1987. NCSTC announced to set up a National Popularization award that recognized the contribution of individuals in science and technology.

Theme of National Science Day 2022

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology has launched the National Science Day (NSD) 2022 theme. “Integrated Approach in S&T for Sustainable Future’ is the theme for NSD 2022. He added that the theme has been selected for the appreciation of the general public on scientific issues. It should not be a one-day event.

The Government is working towards the integration of science and technology institutions and other stakeholders to work on the theme-based approach to problem-solving, extended science integration of engineering, technical and medical institutions for a sustainable future. The GOI is planning to invite government and private institutions to come together and work towards a sustainable future.

The discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir. C.V. Raman is celebrated on this day. Different programs are organized at school, college and university levels to spread awareness about the contribution of Science and Technology to human life. It encourages young minds to contribute to Science and Technology.
