The CBSE 10th class English Language and Literature comprises three sections as given in the table below:

Note: The annual board exam will be of 80 marks, with a duration of three hours. There will be an internal assessment of 20 marks.
Section A-Reading Skills: 20 Marks
The Reading Skills part will have two unseen passages of total 700 to 750 words, as explained below:
- A factual passage of 300 to 350 words containing 8 multiple choices questions of 8 marks.
- A discursive passage of 350 to 400 words with objective-type questions to test vocabulary and four short Answer Type questions to test evaluation, inference, and analysis of 12 marks.
Section B-Writing and Grammar: 30 Marks
There will be an internal choice for writing tasks.
- Formal letter based on the given situation in about 150 to 200 words of 10 marks.
- Writing an analytical paragraph on the basis of a given chart/map/report/ line graph etc. in about 150 to 200 words of 10 marks.
The grammar part will include the following topics in class 10th:
- Tenses
- Modals
- Use of passive voice
- Subject-verb concord
- Reported speech

Clauses

The above-cited topics may be tested through test types as follows:
- Gap filling or editing in sentence/words. Conjunctions, Articles and Tenses.
- Dialogue writing/reporting a dialogue. Synonyms, Antonyms and sentence rearrangement.
Section C-Literature Textbook and Supplementary Reading Text: 30 Marks
There will be an internal choice.
- One out of two extracts from drama/prose/poetry for reference to context. There will be two short answer-type questions on interpretation. Each question will be of 2 marks (4 Marks).
- Five out of seven short answer-type questions to be replied within the range of 30 to 40 words each from FIRST FLIGHT and FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET (3 from FIRST FLIGHT and 2 from FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET) (10 Marks).
- One out of two Long Answer Type questions from the book ‘First Flight’ to be answered in 100 to 150 words each to examine creativity, imagination, and extrapolation beyond the text and across the texts (8 Marks).
- One out of two Long Answer Type question from the book ‘FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET’ on theme or plot involving interpretation, extrapolation beyond the text, and inference or character sketch to be answered in 100 to 150 words (8 Marks).

Internal Assessment: 20 Marks
This section includes an assessment of listening and speaking skills which will be of 20 marks.
