CBSE 12th English Syllabus

Part A: 40 Marks

Reading Comprehension (20 Marks)

  1. Objective type questions based on one unseen passage to assess comprehension, interpretation, and inference. Vocabulary & inference of meaning will also be examined. The passage may be based on fact, descriptive or literary. 10 out of 11 questions to be done. (10×1=10 Marks)
  2. Objective-type questions related to one unseen case-based factual passage with verbal/visual inputs like charts, statistical data, newspaper reports etc. Attempt any 10 out of 11 questions (10×1=10 Marks).

Note: The combined word limit will be 700-750 words for both passages.

Literature 20 Marks

  1. Objective type questions based on two prose extracts, one each from the books Flamingo and Vistas, to assess comprehension and appreciation. Refer to the lines to answer questions based on the given extract. Attempt 2 out of 3 extracts to be done (8×1=8).
  2. Multiple Choice Questions based on poetry extract from the book Flamingo to assess comprehension, analysis, and inference. Refer to the lines to answer questions based on the given extract. Answer 1 out of 2 extracts.(4×1=4)
  3. Objective type questions to assess comprehension, examination, inference and interpretation from the books Flamingo and Vistas. Any 8 out of 10 questions to be done (8×1=8).

Part B: Subjective Questions (40 Marks)

Writing Section: 16 Marks

Q1. Short writing task: Notice/Advertisement/Poster up to fifty words. Any 1 out of the 2 given questions to be replied (3 Marks: Format: 1 / Content: 1 / Expression: 1).

Q2. Short writing task: Formal/Informal Invitation and Reply up to fifty words. Any 1 out of the 2 given questions to be replied. (3 Marks: Format : 1 / Content : 1 / Expression : 1).

Q3. Letters based on verbal/visual input, to be answered in around 120-150 words. Letter types include an application for a job, Business or official letters (for making enquiries, registering complaints, Letters to the editor (giving suggestions or opinion on matters of public interest), asking for and giving information, placing orders, and sending replies). Any 1 out of the 2 given questions to be replied (5 Marks: Format: 1 / Content: 2 / Expression: 2).

Q4. Article/ Speech/Debate/Report Writing, expressive and analytical in nature, based on verbal inputs, to be replied in 120-150 words. Any 1 out of the 2 given questions (5 Marks: Format: 1 / Content: 2 /Expression: 2).

Literature Section: 24 Marks

Q5. Five Short answer-type questions (out of six) to be replied to in 30-40 words, from Prose and Poetry from the book Flamingo. Questions should elicit inferential responses through critical thinking. (5×2=10)

Q6. Two Short answer type questions (out of three), to be answered in 30-40 words from Prose (Vistas). Questions should elicit inferential responses through critical thinking. (2×2=4).

Q 7. One descriptive answer type question to be answered in 120-150 words from Prose/poetry (Flamingo), to assess global comprehension and extrapolation beyond the text. Questions to provide evaluative and analytical responses using themes, events, and incidents as reference points. Reply 1 out of 2 questions (1×5=5).

Q.8 One descriptive answer type question to be replied to in 120 to 150 words, based on the chapters from the book Vistas, to assess global comprehension and extrapolation beyond the text. Questions to provide evaluative and analytical responses using themes, incidents, events as reference points. Answer any 1 out of 2 questions (1×5=5).
